WTF: Cops Shoot at Unarmed Man, Hit 2 Bystanders, Charge Man with Assault

Another in our continuing series called WTF. When I first read the following headline, I was sure it had to be from The Onion. But it's not. It's real:

Unarmed Man Charged With Vicarious Assault After NYPD Trying to Shoot Him Missed and Shot Two Women Instead
A grand jury has charged Glenn Broadnax, an unarmed, emotionally disturbed, possibly suicidal man who in September wandered into traffic in Times Square with felony assault - maximum sentence: 25 years - after NYPD officers opened fire on him in the mistaken belief he had a gun; with their usual stellar markmanship, they instead hit two women, one using a walker. Regardless, the nine-count indictment unsealed this week charged that Broadnax “recklessly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death.” An assistant D.A. concurred, arguing that “the defendant is the one that created the situation that injured innocent bystanders.”
And the medical community is complicit in this insanity:
After his arrest, Mr. Broadnax was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he told a detective that “he was talking to dead relatives in his head and that he tried throwing himself in front of cars to kill himself,” according to a court document released on Wednesday.
A judge ordered a mental evaluation, and a psychiatrist later found Mr. Broadnax competent to stand trial, Ms. Appling said.
Oh, yeah, of course he's competent! Hearing voices and throwing himself in front of traffic. Obviously he's sane.

Police state. Police state. This country is a fucking police state. It's a Kafkaesque nightmare.
