Obomber

Brought to you by the Nobel Peace Prize Prez:
Kerry Makes It Clear: Obama Wants Authority to Deploy Ground Troops in Iraq and Syria
by Sarah Lazare
"The 2001 AUMF has been stretched well beyond what Congress intended, and there is no reason to believe the 2015 AUMF will not as well." —Marjorie Cohn, Thomas Jefferson School of Law.
But, as usual, for know-nothing Democrats -- as bad as the know-nothing Republicans they love to decry -- Obama can do no wrong.

I used to say, back when Bush was president, that, for the Republican faithful, he would have to personally go up in a plane, bomb American cities, deny it, and still his supporters wouldn't shake their faith in him. They would find a way to make excuses. Well, the same is true for party Democrats now.

The overwhelming sentiment of voters in this country is: "It's all okay, as long as my guy is doing it."

And then we have the spectacle of former anti-war activist John Kerry leading the charge! The hypocrisy of this country is off the charts.

Free Speech My Ass

Well, I thought it was only Dieudonné who'd been arrested in France for speech, as I wrote earlier today. Now it turns out that 54 people have been arrested -- some have already been sentenced -- some are minors.

You can't make this shit up. The level of hypocrisy is staggering.
Days After Free Speech Rally, France Arrests 54 People for Offensive Speech
Observers warn that government reaction in wake of Charlie Hebdo killings reminiscent of post-9/11 fear campaign

Is This What You Call Freedom of Speech?

Is this what people call freedom of speech?

Dieudonné arrested over Facebook post on Paris gunman
Notorious French comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala has been arrested for being an “apologist for terrorism” after suggesting on Facebook that he sympathised with one of the Paris gunmen, a judicial source has said.
Prosecutors had opened the case against him on Monday after he wrote “Tonight, as far as I’m concerned, I feel like Charlie Coulibaly” – mixing the slogan “Je suis Charlie”, used in tribute to the journalists killed at magazine Charlie Hebdo, with a reference to gunman Amédy Coulibaly. Dieudonné was arrested on Wednesday.
Coulibaly killed four people at a Jewish supermarket on Friday and a police officer the day before . . . .

Not only is this arrest blatantly hypocritical, but Stéphane Charbonnier and the other murdered Charlie Hebdo staffers would have defended Dieudonné's right to free speech (even as they may have ridiculed him in one of their cartoons).

"Circus of Hypocrisy" in Paris

Excerpt from interview with Jeremy Scahill on Democracy Now:
JEREMY SCAHILL: Yeah, well, I mean, first of all, you know, what we saw yesterday on display, on the one hand, was very heartening, to see so many people come into the streets. And, you know, one of the core issues of press freedom, if this is a moment where the whole world is saying we have to have a free press, and that no matter how controversial or hateful some of the speech is or may be interpreted in some communities, that we judge a free press by how we treat the journalists or the stories that we don’t like or that we’re offended by.
But on the other hand, this is sort of a circus of hypocrisy when it comes to all of those world leaders who were marching at the front of it. I mean, every single one of those heads of state or representatives of governments there have waged their own wars against journalists. You know, David Cameron ordered The Guardian to smash with a hammer the hard drives that stored the files of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Blasphemy is considered a crime in Ireland. You had multiple African and Arab leaders whose own countries right now have scores of journalists in prison. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Israel has targeted for killing numerous journalists who have reported on the Palestinian side, have kidnapped, abducted, jailed journalists.

More Overprivileged, Idiot Athletes? I'm Shocked, Shocked, I Say!

These administrators are nauseating:
Carol Folt, the university chancellor, with Tom Ross, the university president. She said the fake classes thrived for so long because it was hard for people to fathom that they could even exist.
Really? Really?? Gee, that's funny, because I've known about them since I was in high school, and that was 40 years ago.

Obamabots on Parade: Episode 1,083

Americans and Their Hypocrisy Over Football Redux

Amid all the faux outrage over NFL thug Ray Rice, who clocked his then-fiancée-now-wife in an elevator and knocked her out cold, then dragged & kicked her body as if it were a bag of trash, I'm reposting what I wrote back in January, which also links to an op-ed I did in 2003. Not that any of it matters. Fans will always be fans, no matter how many criminals get in the way:

U.S./Middle East Politics Explained (Kinda Sorta)

Wish I could give attribution for this; it was sent to me on email, and it's being posted and reposted all over the blabbosphere. It's pretty great, so I'm joining the fray:

Eternal War, or Reason #167 Why Obama is the Second Coming of George W. Bush

Well, as predicted, Obama is once again striving to prove he's just as clueless, blinkered, and warmongering as his predecessor. It's hard to tell anymore who in the stupidity sweepstakes is winning.

Gaza: We Are Responsible

Our great poet and national conscience, Chris Hedges:

. . . The unanimous U.S. Senate vote in support of the Israeli attacks on Gaza, the media’s slavish parroting of Israeli propaganda, and the Obama administration’s mindless repetition of pro-Israeli clichés have turned us into cheerleaders for Israeli war crimes. We fund and abet these crimes with $3.1 billion a year in military aid to Israel. We are responsible for the slaughter. No one in the establishment, including our most liberal senator, Bernie Sanders, dares defy the Israel lobby. And since we refuse to act to make peace and justice possible we should not wonder why the Palestinians carry out armed resistance.

The Palestinians will reject, as long as possible, any cease-fire that does not include a lifting of the Israeli blockade of Gaza. They have lost hope that foreign governments will save them. They know their fate rests in their own hands. The revolt in Gaza is an act of solidarity with the world outside its walls. It is an attempt to assert in the face of overwhelming odds and barbaric conditions the humanity and agency of the Palestinian people. There is little in life that Palestinians can choose, but they can choose how to die. And many Palestinians, especially young men trapped in overcrowded hovels where they have no work and little dignity, will risk immediate death to defy the slow, humiliating death of occupation.

I cannot blame them.

Israeli Women on Facebook Promising Sex As Reward for More Killing

UPDATE BELOW.

I know the human race is fucked up. I know this. I get it. But every time you think you've seen it all, something comes along to show you that you haven't. And that you never will. Since the human imagination is limitless, human depravity likewise knows no bounds.

This is from a Facebook page. Though I'm not a member of Facebook, I can still see the page

As background, Kim Jensen lives in Baltimore, coincidentally not far from me. She is married to a Palestinian man and they have two children. They sometimes visit their relatives, for which they must pass through Israel, where they have to jump through hoops and are usually treated like shit. Their son has been roughed up by Israeli authorities. I realize none of this is surprising to people who know what's going on over there; I'm just providing it as identifying info on Jensen, whose name you'll see in this excerpt. For those who may not know, IAF stands for Israeli Air Force:

Ted Rall on Hawk Hillary

As always, click to enlarge. The great Ted Rall on Hillary Clinton, whom many people support simply because she's a woman. Let that sink in. The logic is: "She has breasts and a vagina; therefore, I'll vote for her." That's what millions of Democrats are thinking.
